Membership

A club that works because members do.

Affordable flying, shared responsibility and a community with deep service roots.

Who can join

Built for Service.
Open by eligibility.

Full membership is available to serving personnel and dependants, veterans, military cadets, flight instructors and civilians who directly contribute to the club’s charitable purpose.

Associate civilian membership may be offered to applicants able to contribute significantly to the club. Associate members do not vote at general meetings. To protect the charity’s primary purpose, civilian membership is limited to a maximum of 25%.

Temporary membership supports short-term examiner or instructor flights, renewals and revalidations. Guests flying as a member’s passenger receive temporary membership for that flight without charge.

The self-help model

More than hiring
an aircraft.

LFC is a club, not a commercial flying school.

Members support the operation in practical ways—from aircraft care and refuelling to administration, clubhouse tasks and sharing expertise. Every contribution helps keep flying affordable.

How membership works

Ready for club flying.

Key information from the July 2026 Guide to Membership, brought together here for prospective and current pilots.

01

Join and get briefed

Apply online or contact the Membership Secretary. The club can arrange a tour and briefing covering training, recreational flying and the self-help model.

02

Book through Goboko

Once membership is processed, members receive personal access to view aircraft and instructor availability and make bookings online.

03

Complete a club check

Licensed pilots complete a check flight before acting as pilot in command and acquaint themselves with the Operations Manual, Flying Order Book and safety instructions.

04

Stay current

Club currency normally varies between 45 and 90 days according to experience. A short instructor check restores currency when the applicable limit is exceeded.

05

Fly further

Members are encouraged to make landaways, join group fly-outs and arrange overnight trips in accordance with the Operations Manual.

06

Bring passengers

Licence holders may carry non-member guests. Their full name and emergency-contact mobile number must be entered in the Journey Log.

Learning to fly

Start with a clear plan.

No student licence is required to begin instruction, but an appropriate medical certificate is required before first solo. Students should aim to fly at least twice each month where practical, as long gaps can increase revision time.

  • Published indicative PPL budget: approximately £11,050 for a regularly flying average student
  • Budget includes flying, instructor time, exams, medical, equipment, logbook and test/licensing fees
  • ELCAS may help eligible Service personnel fund approved modular PPL training
  • A 30-minute trial lesson can be arranged before committing to full membership
